There should be precautions against the possibility of increases in the cost of the project due to failed due dates. Remember that the labour cost will be at a fixed rate which affects you negatively if the project takes longer than it is supposed to finish.

You should be doing regular and routine checks, requesting weekly or monthly reports of what has been done so far. That way you will have an idea of where the project is at.

If you follow these steps you can most likely save on your budget. Although, some costs will be inevitable.
